High and low tides are caused by the gravity forces of both Moon and Earth. High tides are formed on the close side of Earth to the Moon which are affected by the moon gravitation, while on the far side from Moon high tides also occur due to a bulge caused by gravity of Earth. Low tides occur when the forces balance each other. Therefore there are 2 High tides and 1 low tide a day.
