Here's some great senior exercises you can do at home. You should probably exercise for 20 minutes 3X a week, but check with your doctor first!

Exercise falls into two broad categories:  aerobic and strength training.  Some commonally held prinicipals:  mix it up, if you do upper body one day the next do lower; at 60 recovery is important; increase intensity/effort gradually but steadily.  Find something you like and will stick at.

I am 61.  I work out six days a week.  I swim 45 minutes twice a week.  I do weights twice a week (about 1 hour in gym).  The other two days I bike or run outside.

My schedule is a little above average but not extreme.  Weight training is especially important as you get older and you need at least 60 minutes to get in good workout using a variety of muscle groups.

People talk about 20 minutes as a minimum but really you will need 45 minutes of aerobic to see real benefit.  Work up to it gradually.

Thanks for your answer.

I would appreciate your thoughts on my exercise routine.

Monday and Wednesday-1 hr. on the treadmill- approx 4 miles-1 hr spinning- 45 minutes weight training.

Tuesday and Thursday- 1 hr. on the treadmill-approx 1 hr. on the stationary bike-1 hr. of group Pilates

I've been following this routine for about a year and a half. I've lost about 30 lbs. and 5 inches off my waist and my cholesterol is way down.

Wow!  I thought I was talking to a novice.  Sounds great.  If you are feeling good stick to it.  However, I am curious about Fri, Sat, Sun.

I think four hours on the "dreadmill" is a lot but if you are thriving on it then go for it.

I like the balance you created with weights and Pilates; stationary and spinning.

I think I should be asking your advice.  Good job.

Next time you get a physical let the Doc know you schedule and he can advise any special blood tests to see how your body is handling the load.

70 thumbs up

my dad is 62 and he is training for a half marathon.

exercise all depends on what works the best for you...take into consideration your current health status, any surgeries you may have had, and any medications that you are on.

it is best to consult with your doc before starting an exercise program.

best of luck.
