Excess shedding and weight loss in my Pommie

I have 2 Pomeranians, 1 male and 1 female. The male is 8 and suffers with Addisons disease and hypothyroidism. Since regulaing his soloxine intake, his energy level has improved but his hair growth has not. He also drinks excessive amounts of water which my vet attributes to the soloxine and the Doca injection he receives every month. My female has lost weight and is shedding excessively. Since my male is a little overweight and his energy has increased, we walk a lot more than before. While I am trying to take off his extra pounds, can it be too much for my girl? In every other aspect she is great. Good appetite, doesn't drink excessively and appears normal in all other areas. On the 21st, my male will be going in to the Vet for his Doca injection at which point I will have her checked as well. Am I over reacting? They are very sweet dogs and I love them to death.

I also have a pomeranian.  We found him at a gas station eating garbage about 4 years ago.  He is approx. 14 years old.  I have never had an issue with his weight or with him losing his fur, if anything he produces way too much!  I would recommend that you take her to the vet to get her blood work.  Could be anything from Stress to Parasites.  Let us know how it turns out.

Hair loss could be a few things: possiblity of stress or development of a food alergy are the ones that come to mind.  Present your questions to hospital@uga.edu maybe the vet school in GA can help. I hope you get the help you need with your little ones.  You might want to see if there is some Holistic alternative for them.

Get some crown royal shampoo and conditioner for their type of coat. You can buy it from care alot. Then use the magic coat spray. It will make their hair grow!!! I know it works, cause,i was a dog groomer for 30 years. I had poms lose their hair, then grow it back with this shampoo and cinditioners. It works. As for walking your female, yes, you can still walk her, just be easy on her.

1 thumb up

Take both dogs in to the vet and list your concerns.  You are not over-reacting.   Poms do (as you already know with your male) have endocrine problems that affect their hair, weight and energy level.  You need to discuss his water consumption and her weight  and hair loss with your vet.

While I can't diagnose your Pommie's hair loss, nor the excess sheding.  I will submit that brewers yeast can help with his coat and skin condition.  The overweight thing concerns me, however.  As animal lovers, we tend to love them too much, over-feeding, the wrong kind of treats, and such, will definitely lead to some real problems somewhere down the line.

As for your female, the exercise and the resulting weight loss, should be good for her.  However, I submit, that proper nutrition, in tandum with the exercise, should be all that is required to maintain her good health.

I am a breeder of Pomeranians and I have had very good results with Purina's Puppy Chow, given to my adults as well as to my puppies.  In addition to the Puppy Chow, I give my dogs a treat each night.  I have found that chicken is a wonderful treat for your dog, especially the breast meat, cooked in the microwave.  They receive the chicken as a healthy treat, not a meal, except on occasion.  In conjuction with the foods, that my dogs receive, I make sure they get plenty of exercise, which counteracts the higher protien levels of their Puppy Chow.  None of my dogs are overweight, I only have twenty.  Should they show signs of weight gain, I just regulate their food intake.  If you leave their food down in the "free choice" mode, some, not all, will tend to eat too much and gain weight.  I feed mine a snack of Puppy Chow in the morning, then take the bowls up, and putting them back down late in the evening, just at our meal time.  It works for me as they seem to be thriving and I have had no health problems thus far.  I have been doing it this way for ten years.  The only Pommie I have lost was due to a bad heart (from birth) and he was 12 years old.

I really think that exercise is the key in conjunction with their nutrition for the overall health of any dog, not just the Poms..
