A:Thank you gradnin! I guess it has something to do with the PC's regional settings as you suggested. I fixed it (or so I believe) by changing the cell style - it was set to disaply numbers in currency format by default. Not a complete solution because I will have to turn on the new style for every new sheet but it's bearable.
