Excel 2007 - currency format

Excel 2007 automatically converts numerical values into the currency format. Every time I set the cells to "general" format it converts them to "currency" again (after reopening the file). How do I stop that annoying formatting?

There is never a good time to buy a new computer.

First off, let me say that I am not actually running Excel 2007.  As this question has been up for more than a day without an answer, I thought that I should at least offer a response.

A couple of possibilities that I can think of include:

  • that there is probably an AutoCorrect  choice that could need to be adjusted.  In Office 2003 it was located in the "Tools" menu.
  • or it could be in AutoFormat, which was on the "Fromat" menu in Office 2003.
  • that you might be using a version of Windows in a different base language than the Beta software.
  • that your copy of Windows might be set for a different type of currency than the Beta software is expecting.
(currency and language differences can cause some very bizarre behavior)

That being said, I believe the final version Office 2007 is currently in production but not yet available to buy in stores.  Microsoft has this list of known Office 2007 bugs.  In the first couple of months after this software is widely available, people are going to identify a mountain of new bugs and Microsoft is going to patch a ton of things. This is one of the reasons that I normally head towards new software releases with lowered expectations.

Not sure if any of this helps, but like I said I just wanted to offer a response.

Thank you gradnin! I guess it has something to do with the PC's regional settings as you suggested. I fixed it (or so I believe) by changing the cell style - it was set to disaply numbers in currency format by default. Not a complete solution because I will have to turn on the new style for every new sheet but it's bearable.
