Examples of peace

What is a good example of peace or disarmament that other regions in conflict might follow?  I'm saddened by all of the bombs and guns in the world, which kill and injure so many people.  I'd like some hope that there is a way out of such violence.

Paradoxically, to a certain extent, the biggest success story in a peace / disarmament process in history comes from the break-up of the Soviet Union.

Never in history an Army of HUNDREDS of thousands of effective soldiers retreated peacefully and voluntarily without being defeated. In just a handful of months almost half a million of Red Army soldiers left eastern european countries and former USSR republics.

It goes much to the credit of the heavily criticized political leadership of the time (Gorbachev before and Yeltsin afterwards) the fact of having avoided a bloodshed in Yugoslavian style.

Political leadership is key, this is the only answer, imho.

A good example of peace in Israel would be the peace with both Jordan and Egypt. Both of those countries fought with Israel many years. For my opinion we could only come to an agreement after both parties became more aware of the damage from war- not only the direct damage but also the economical and international opinion damage. Jordan and Egypt, realized there's nothing they could do to make us disappear.

As soon as the Palestinians would understand we're not going anywhere and that they are the ones losing from their battles (all the money is going for war instead of the welfare of the people) we'd have a chance for peace.

I think the same about El kaida and Iran. As soon as they realize that they won't end the existence of th US and Israel there would be a chance for peace. Unfortunately those realizations take years and sometime decades. The only question is how much further damage would occur till then.
