The Best Example of Web 2.0

Web 2.0 has been with us for a while, but the exact definition of what Web 2.0 means is still controversial. No matter which definition you prefer - Tim O'Reilly's, Wikipedia's, Paul Graham's,  or the famous Web 2.0 validator's – it's clear that some companies do it better than others. In fact, you could argue that some companies have been doing it before the term was coined.

So, in your opinion, which company – recent or old [in internet years] sets the best example of Web 2.0?

As far as new tools - I'd probably say Google Mail (or Gmail) - it's very well thought out, and in my opinion the best web-based e-mail out there, especially with addition of Calendar and other convenient and useful features like IM and Chat.

As a second nominee - I'd have to pick Clipmarks (www.clipmarks.com), because it serves the need of every computer user, in a very elegant and very much web 2.0 way.

FLICKR - would be my choice, simply because it:

- Has a good balance of web 2.0 magics(ajax, tags, community, foaf). You get all the familiar tools that have become standards - in an easy UI.

- Has a Deep User Experience- Flickr is more than album sharing. It's a living playground where people interact through pictures and their related stories. You delve into Flickr emotionally.

- Stays Slim- no point in being a bloated "all-in-one" website. The ones that managed to combine elegantly a slim design with maximum experience and stickyness are the pillars of Web 2.0 (digg is another one, but appealing to a smaller userbase).

Why not MySpace???

Only because the search there is so crap, in a way that leaves any above-average user very frustrated.

Without any doubt, eBay sets the best example of Web 2.0.

I don’t know if eBay’s founder Pierre Omidyar was thinking how the internet would look like in 2006 but the original concept is the best example for community based service.

eBay Wiki is how they trying to dives into Web 2.0 and be more trendy today.

My suggestion to them is: don’t try to run after all kinds of hypes, stay exactly as you are, the original web 2.0 company!

Don't forget StumbleUpon which to me sets such an amazing example of the potential of web 2.0 sites.
