Everybody assumes the brain chemicals are the cause. What if?

My question is this: why do studies such as this one always presume that the biochemical differences they detect are the "cause" of the condition? Why do so many scientists and researchers ignore the possibility that having the emotional and or mental conditions they are studying cause the brain biochemistry to change? That possibility suggests that simply taking a drug to "restore" normal chemical balance only masks the problem that is the real cause of the behavior and reduces greatly the possibility that the individual will ever come to grips with his real issues. thanks johnd

"What does it profit a man to gain the world if he loses his soul?"

They weren't actually saying what caused the bio-chemical imbalances, though some of it could be caused physical problems with the brain or surrounding hardware.  Take the drop in serotonin levels.  Serotonin is produced outside of the brain and has to pass through a membrane in order to reach the brain and be used.

It seems that they are trying to attack this problem from all the possible angles they can, and this is just one small experiment with two dozen people using a technique that is fairly new.  They weren't trying to prove much beyond showing that they could indeed trace the levels of certain chemicals in certain parts of the brain, and that they could find a difference between the two groups of 12 people.

You could very well be right that the problem could be totally psychological and that the chemical changes are self induced.  They aren't discounting that when they prescribe serotonin uptake receptor inhibiters or whatever they give out to change the balance of chemicals, just that they can mitigate the symptoms with these drugs.  They are looking at all angles and undoubtedly psychologists somewhere are working on the exact same problem from a different angle.

The documentary film "Critical Condition" by Roger Weisberg premieres on PBS's P.O.V. series on Tuesday, September 30 at 9 PM on most PBS stations. (Check your local listings.) The film puts a human face on the nation's growing health care crisis by capturing the harrowing struggles of four critically ill Americans who discover that being uninsured can cost them their jobs, health, home, savings, even their lives. Karen Dove loses her insurance because her deteriorating health forces her to quit her job as an apartment manager. When she begins experiencing severe recurrent abdominal pains, the doctors she contacts refuse to treat uninsured patients. A year later, after she finally finds a gynecologic oncologist willing to treat her, she is diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian cancer, which is almost always fatal.
