My 32-yr old dtr-in-law has just been diagnosed ...

My 32-yr old dtr-in-law has just been diagnosed with Eosinophilic Esophagitis .  She is hoping to get pregnant within the next few years.  Does this diagnosis present any problems (she also has Crohn's disease).  How will the medicine she has to take affect her pregnancy?  Thank you for your help.  We are concerned.

Lynne

I have seen some articles which found that a pregnancy might influence Eosinophilic Esophagitis severity, though none were conclusive.

Your daughter in law should talk to her doctor (when she will decide to get pregnant) because there might be an interaction between the disease the drug she takes (for the Eosinophilic Esophagitis & the Crohn's disease) that might influence the pregnancy.

I know of 2 types of drugs used to treat this condition. The first group includes proton pump inhibitors such as Pantoprazole and Esomeprazole. Not enough research has been conducted in order to get a clear picture of their effect on pregnancy. The other group includes steroids, that are anti inflammatory drugs. The fact is that some steroids can cross the placenta and can effect the fetus. you should consult your doctor for more specific information. I'm sure he'll be able to give you some good advice. All the best.
