Enterprise's elevator

I think that the most interesting and technologically advanced part of the starship Enterprise is it's elevator. That thing can go anywhere on the ship!


Can anyone explain how does this elevator go to sections that aren't necessarily placed on a vertical axis, one above the other?

Not 100 % sure, but if I remember correctly it's not really an elevator but a sort of pod that can move along both horizontal and vertical axes.
