Governor Eliot Spitzer was involved in a prostitution ring? How could an intelligent prosecutor with political ambition get involved in criminal actitivity? Can his career survive, or will he need to resign?
In his statement to the press, Gov. Spitzer said he violated obligations to his family and violated any sense of right and wrong. He didn't admit he violated the law.
A sex scandal is bad, but not always criminal. But the New York Times indicates that prostitution cases are state crimes, and transporting someone between states for prostitution is a federal crime. So if the story is true, I think that Spitzer's resignation is a matter of time.

It's amazing how many men with power throw it all away on sex. Oh well. Add Spitzer to the list (McGreevey, Bill Clinton (who survived) ...)
The main people I feel bad for are Slida Wall Spitzer and the children. How embarrassing and sad for them.

The Romans had a saying that those whom the gods would destroy they first make drunk with power. People with power think they can get away with anything.
No one is perfect, but these activities by a public official are illegal. He should resign. He should step out of public life and try to rebuild what he can of another career. He has disqulaified himself from public office.

His political career is definitely over. I remember when Bill Clinton was interviewed after his activity with Monica Lewinsky and his admitting the affair that when asked why he did it, he answered because he knew he could get away with it. I think it fits this situation perfectly. I think Governor Spitzer thought he could get away with it. I think he thought he'd never get caught.

It is important to note that what is defined a criminal isn't always portrayed as criminal in the eyes of the power elite. It is the powerful in our society who decide was is considered be criminal or deviant behavior, not your average person. I do feel that Governor Spitzer felt that was he was doing may have been wrong but was not criminal because the FBI does not define prostitution as a crime in their crime index. It isn't even reported in crime statistics. Each state within the United States has it's own version of the codes on prostitution since it is consider a "victimless crime". I don't think he felt he was doing anything wrong except for betraying his lovely wife and children. Obviously, what he did was wrong because he also betrayed the public and his position within society.
