Dear Hilde B,

I do not think it will be possible to eliminate the crease left by an old hemline mainly because the fabric changes color from being repeatedly washed and ironed.  Ironing the hemline will set the fabric in that position and the line remains unfortunately.

Something I heard of years ago is to try sponging it with vinegar.

I have no idea if it will work, but it shouldn't damage the fabric so you can certainly try.

Sponge the crease with white vinegar and then use a damp pressing cloth (not a steam iron).

Good luck.

Instant Person-Just add coffee.

I have had good luck with soaking a rag in white vinegar and pressing it over the seam.  The seam could be a different color because of fading but it doesn't always show.

I do what URI does with the vinegar and a rag. The problem is the line that may be left. If that's the case, what I do is find a permanent magic marker as close to the color of the fabric as possible and fill it in with the marker. I've had good look with this especially on darker colors.

I too have had some luck using white vinegar although it doesn't work every time and on a few hems I have used the technique repeatedly before I have got any result. My daughter has used the "wrinkle release" sold in stores and says it works "okay".

As for the line that is sometimes noticable I use fabric paint because of the wide variety of colors that are available

Besides trying to remove the line from the hem. You may just sew a very narrow seam to cover it. True it leaves a seam line but at least its the same color and may look like part of the hem process...sew the seam from the back side the narrowest width to cover the discolored section..D.

Vinegar water will work or a treated cloth called "RAJAH CLOTH" does a good job too.  But be mindful that the fold in the original hem may show because of discoloration over a period of time and washings  especially if the fabric on a dark one.
