Hello John:
It is my understanding South Africa is in the midst of its worst ever electrical power crisis with the inability to keep up with demand across the board.
The Country's electricity supplier is looking to other options to meet the economic growth in the area of solar power and is currently talking with the U.S. for information and a better understanding on the subject of (LP) gas use.
A problem exists from a lack of gas lines. Everything seems to be run predominately with electric, with petrol and diesel generators, with ozone generators for the purification of water, and standby or the all-important prime power generators and high coal-use affecting residential, commercial and industrial needs.
There is a new nuclear fission plant being built and hydrogen fuel cells could become the predominant fuel option.
A big part of the diesel is used in peaking power stations . . . from coal trucked-in; also used in standby generators.
You might want to check further on the MariAnnhill Landfil in connection with any potential Gas engines/generators needs. View the PDF file at: www.enviros.com/PDF/CivilEngNov2007.pdf
Also delve into the Forest Oil Ibubesi Gas Field finds (Cape Town) project discovered nearly 10 years ago. The company stopped all work because of the lack of demand, in addition to problems with mineral royalties and tax issues. If this has been cleared up efficient construction of gas power stations could be quickly built.
Consumer use is around 15% - Zimbabwe 15% - with South African Mines utilizing the majority of power.
I would also suggest speaking with the South African Consulate in your area to acquire help in getting the updated and specific information you need.
Africa is changing rapidly; the more you know about it the easier it will be to make an informed decision.
