Election Reform

It should be obvious that, since 2000, our election process is badly broken.

Let's discuss methods and protocols to rebuild our election system so that it's fair and doesn't take forever.

What steps would you suggest for improving the system?

Ok, I'll give this one a nudge. There are a number of things that need to be done, but foremost is that we have to STOP tolerating candidate infractions. These should be dealt with immediately and severely. I'm talking about expulsion from the election and banning from all future elections.

* Registration for office would take place in Jan of the election year. No more eternal elections.

* At that time, each candidate MUST present proper and certified documentation, including birth certificate (no live birth), full military records, college transcripts, any publications, etc, etc.

*FEC would then undertake a full and thorough background investigation as if for a high level security clearance.

* Campaigning begins in Feb. It goes through June. The conventions would be held in July and there would be NO campaigning during that month. From August to the election campaigning would be allowed.

* There would be an ABSOLUTE limit on the amount of money each candidate is allowed to spend.

* Outside agencies would be allowed to post ISSUE ads, but no endorsements, nor any ID as to what party or candidate they advocate.

* Television would be prohibited from covering the election EXCEPT for the debates. No more deceptive sound bites.  The campaigns would be covered by print media or on the 'net. If you can't read, too bad, you have four years to learn.

* ANY legislation or actions advocated by a candidate MUST have, and be presented with, Constitutional justification for the action.

* ANY violation of these regulations would result in the disqualification of the candidate and a ban from all future elections.

ADDENDUM

* ALL candidates are required to have served at least two tours of duty in the US Armed Services. (this added after discussion. I forgot it on the first pass)

* An indictment will lead to immediate suspension until the case is resolved. A conviction will cause the permanent removal from office without possibility of holding office again.

That enough to get you thinking?

The only way this will change is when money gets out of the equation. Because it takes a lot of money to do that and that is a fact.

That's why I advocate a fixed upper limit, also the restriction from TV, that's where the real costs seem to be.

I think that if TV is really interested in telling the truth about the Canidates they shouldn't charge so much to give us the information to help us make our own minds. Everybody is interested in the almighty dollar.

The thing that is really sad is McCain said that he would take public funds after Obama said he would and Obama changed his mind because he knew there wasn't enoough money to buy the election. Just like Bush did.

The lowest servant in Heaven is still in Heaven.

Whoever rules in hell is still in hell, but they won't rule for long.

If I had my way:

1. To hold ANY public office at the national level, I would require at least two (preferably twenty) years active duty military service AND Honorable discharge.

2. Clean criminal record.

3. Q-clearance awarded BEFORE running for Senate, House, or Governor.

4. LOYALTY proven not by party support, but by a track record of service.

5. Ph.D degree or higher for President, MS/MA for Senate/House. BS/BA for any Governor. Presidential candidates MUST have served as Governor, AND Senate/House.

6. Need not be born in America, but must prove at least 35 years RESIDENCY.

That will not be popular with Democrats, but it will avoid the nightmares we saw with Clinton and absolutely shall see with Obama.

No question about it, we have to re-think how we elect politicians.

Geoff, you speak the truth. In our earliest days, we had some odd politics to contend with but you make suggestions I am all too glad to support!

Well, you got me. I forgot to add military service. That's one that I had included when I first postulated these changes.

You can't be CNC if you haven't a clue as to how the military works.

That's what scares me, Geoff! Our new Commander In Chief has doubtless never read (or understood) so much as the UCMJ, much less studied the Manual for Courts Martial. Not so for John Glenn. Why didn't the Democrats run Glenn? He fought in Korea, flew our first orbital NASA mission, and served diligently in the Senate long after he earned his Ph.D in Aeronautics. Buzz Aldrin would not make the cut because he never served as Governor or Senator. Arnold Schwarzenegger earned his Ph.D in Austria and did more study in Germany before he came here to become a movie producer. Colin Powell proved his mettle in Desert Storm, and is one of the brightest stars in Politician's Heaven!

I'd vote for Powell in a heartbeat!

Actually, I believe Arnie earned his masters at U of WI. He hadn't done anything (educationally) of significance before he arrived in the US. ANY person who can speak six languages has it over the rest of us.
