Eating Disorders as a Universal Issue

Are eating disorders as a phenomenon common to all cultures in a similar way?

It seems that in the States we tend to blame TV and popular media, which only show us really thin women, but is there really a difference in places where TV is less common?

Yes, a study showed that after television was introduced to Fiji, in 1995, there was an

outbreak of eating disorders.

Eating disorders exist in all times and cultures, but they are more common in cultures where media promote an unhealthily slim ideal.

Eating disorders are not a sign that a person has a problem with food, rather eating disorders are actually only the symptoms of underlying problems in that person's life. With proper treatment, people can fully recover. Hi,

Eating disorders have indeed become a universal issue, especially in cities where TV, media, movies, and other electronic channels have greater impact compare to smaller towns, and country-side. Apart from that, there are greater social and peer pressure in bigger cities to look slim and thin. However, I reckon it all started from western world, especially States.
