Easy to use graphics software

I am looking for a simple and easy to use (and affordable) graphics software to create some nice icons and other graphics. any recommendations?

Here's a site which offers quite a few, easy to use, tools for drawing icons.  Tools are not shareware but evaluated for a trial period: http://www.aha-soft.com/download.htm

If you want small icons such as are found on the desktop, then you can create them in Paint.  Blow the blank screen up (zoom) and put a grid on it.  All this is straight from the tool bar.  Of course, you only get bmps.  I am not familiar with the above.  If the need arises, then I will do the first.  I am not into trial periods. (I am hoping not to get called for jury duty.)
