When was Easter first celebrated in colonial or antebellum America. I have spent a lot of time on this question and have hit the proverbial "brick wall." My best efforts lead me to believe the first celebration was between 1840 and 1880; and probably took place in New York City or Baltimore. Although I would most like to know the date, any other information regarding "where," "why," "who" and how would be greatly appreciated. I suspect that the celebration was by a church, but any celebration - even by a group of individuals would do- Many thanks.
