When life presents a challenge, take your shot.

Just because America is hurting, this doesn't mean that we should stop reaching out to help others.  We have always done this, and I don't think that it will hurt America to help other countries.  If American needed help for someting, I'm sure we would expect the world to help us.

I am interested in knowing more details regarding the plans for USA paying for foreign abortions.

Are we talking about aborting fetuses within Mothers who are known to be diseased with Aid's?

Or are we discussing free abortions for foreign countries without regard to the circumstances?

Pres. Obama made certain promises to various groups during his campaign.  He is a Democrat, and as one carries the party line on abortion and abortion rights.  Among those groups that supported him were NARAL, Planned Parenthood and NOW.  For these three groups overturning the "Mexico City Accord" was high on their list of "things to do".  It's the easiest issue for Pres. Obama to deal with, since it's implemented as an executive order.  The original order was put in place by Pres. Ronald Regan during his tenure.  He had recieved a lot of pressure from the "Moral Majority", the religious right, and from those opposed to abortion.  Becuase abortion crosses geographic and religious ideals, it's an issue that really needs a bit more thought put into it.

Imagine what happens when we try to force those in South African nations where tribal rule is law that abortions should be performed to help limit population growth, or because they are in a drought and someone decides they can't adequatly care for the children they have?  Imagine the response in Muslim nations?

I know part of the reason Pres. Obama was elected was due to our poor reputation in the eyes of the world, he is seen as someone that can help restore our prestige.  It's not going to last long if our policies defy religious or cultural teachings.

It's not just a question of money, it's a question of responsibility.  Exporting our ideas, such as abortion on demand, isn't a real good idea.  I feel if we continue on this path our world image will be even worse than it is now.  Rather than exporting things like abortion, why not help those folks overseas develop better farming methods, or assist them in finding clean water?

alnicoeq,

You raise some good points, as Americans we often expect other cultures to accept our ideas as the better way to go.  I still don't know the details of the abortion portion of this plan.

Surely, the areas where it will be offered to will be where it is requested and not forced on anyone?  I continue to believe this may be being offered in those areas where the Mother already has AIDs and the Baby will be left with no one to care for it once the mother dies.  Most of those babies are born with Aids when their Mother was also carrying.

The entire topic is very sensitive and I do hope it will be handled accordingly wherever it is made available.

Assisting these people with better farming methods and clean water would truely be an asset to them.

President Obama and his administration sure have their work cut out for them this next 4 years.
