ESRI is the Environmental Systems Research Institute, which develops land use analysis systems, or GIS.

ESRI is not a thing but an

privately held institute that specializes in GIS (Geographic Information System). GIS used to be something available mainly to the military but it is gradually finding its way into commercial products mainly through the use of GPS navigation systems
