Hi!
I'm an EFL teacher in Serbia. I also teach children of that age. One of the books I've done with my students is "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." They've all seen the film, so they're familiar with the fabula. What is also very important is that the book is full of pictures. So, my advice to you is to find a book the children are familiar with. Depending on their level of knowledge, you can ask them to tell you their story, just looking at the pictures. Or, after a few chapters, you they can roleplay that part of the book. Of course, you should prepare the cards in advance. Or, you can ask them to write or draw (again depending on their level of knowledge) a different ending of the book. While reading, you can ask them what they hear, smell or feel in a scene. What my students like is to determine what horoscope sign is each character. You give them characteristics of each sign and then they try to do the rest.
Well, these are just some of the things you could do to make your students ask you what you're going to read next.
