What do you think are the lessons of the Duke lacrosse case (whether for society, the criminal justice system, or the university)?
One lesson is that Americans can no longer feel that their innocence will always be a sound defense to the slander of an evil person. Another lesson is that America is too intimidated by its past racist tendency and might fall into a dangerous anti-racist backlash.
I think that it teaches that women aren't necessarily always the victims. Just because a woman says that she was rapped or harassed, this could be a horrible crime against the men, being accused of doing something that never took place. This is the worst thing in the world... to be embarrassed and accused of something that one is innocent of. Clearly, the girl was lying and that was obviously apparent in the end. These men will never be the same and they will struggle with this accusation for the rest of their lives. We shouldn't always be quick to feel sorry for the woman. This again is sort of a reverse discrimination that our society has started.
