Xanax and Ativan are both in a class of drugs known as the benzodiazepines.  The act on a particular set of nerves in your lower/old brain and spinal cord.  Some drug tests are not highly specific and only test for the class of drugs.  In this case the test would not identify whether you are taking Xanax or Ativan, but it will identify that you are taking a benzo.  So you should be safe just showing your Rx for Ativan.  However, some drug test are quite specific and they can identify each drug separately.  Your best bet - quit taking other people's medications!  If you run out of a medication call your doctor for a refill.  The benzo's are sooooo inexpensive in generic brand ($5-$10) that even you can scape together the money.  On the other hand, if you ran out because you were taking more than prescribed you won't be able to get a refill from the MD without a good rationale.  In this case quit misusing the meds.  If you're still stressed and nervous talk to your md for additional/alternative meds.  Don't just be a pill user to handle stress - use exercise, counseling, meditation, yoga, change your environment.

Yes, I am on Xanax, and I am on the maximum dosage of 10 mg.  It is very potent.  It is a controlled substance.  It is found in your blood.  It will show up in all of your drug tests including Ativan.  When you have a job you have to copy the prescription bottle or they have to have a script from your physician stating that you take this drug.

Ativan and Xanax both are catagorized as Benzodiazapines, although they work a bit differently. A urine test wouldn't show the difference unless it was looking for a specific drug. The urine tests usually look for the presence of amphetamines, opiates, cocaine, THC, benzodiazapines, and synthetic opiates. Most workplace urine tests aren't sophisticated enough to look for a specific drug, unless you work for the government or a major corporation.

Considering benzos can be habit forming, you'll eventually need to increase your dose. They definitely mess with your memory, so perhaps you can find another way to chill yourself out.

Although they are both benzodiazepines, they will show differently on a test because of the half life of the drug. Ativan has a rapid on set an short half life.

It depend on the kind of drug tests you are taking.  of late there have been different and more intense drug tests since pharmacovilgilance signal detection has become an important event in the drug industry and new cases of adverse events have been reported. 

Both Ativan and Xanax are the same, they are sedatives & hypnotics which are coming under Benzo's, the test will show that u r taking benzo's only without specifying which drug u have taken. any body take such drugs would be addicted and tolerated to, so no any organization work would trust addicts. even if u got it legally (prescription). we are called drug abusers and hence you should be aware that why u been laid off from yr job. i hope you can tolerate this matter for time being and hope youu can get another job to fill .
