I  went on an alcohol awareness course a few years ago, & excessive alcohol usage can cause damage to the nervous system causing tingling & numbness. although smallish amounts just cause temporary discomfort ( as rick described)

 Although these symptoms are temporary in the main the fact we get them means that some kind of disruption is being done every time we experience them, so I guess it's the old chestnut ,"don't drink as much" which is always easier said than done of course.
