Its much easier to drill a pilot hole slightly smaller in diameter to the screw you are using to a depth of about 1/2 inch - especially if the door is constructed of hardwood.  You are less likely to have the screw go askew (at an {undesirable} angle.)  There are coarse thread screws that are essentially "self tapping" that will work without drilling the pilot hole.  Your appliction isn't all that critical so you could go either way.   In either event - be sure to steer clear of the glass.
