The quiet ones, like Beagle, Bulldog, Whippet and so on are the best. Hyperactive dogs in apartments are going to be very hard to handle.

It depends more on your daily routine, if you're jogging every day you can take a more energetic dog and he'll be very happy. Maybe not a Border Collie, but a Collie or a Dalmatian.

The bigger the dog it needs more space and a place to run and play. Big dogs and puppies are advised to be kept most of the time in the outdoors. Other than that most average size dogs and less, with good manners can be kept at home. All dogs need walking and running around in the park so make sure, if you do get a dog, that you'd find it a nice piece of nature to play around in.

I have found med size to small dogs are good.  But they have to be trained.  Small dogs are usually yappers, and any dog needs exercise to wear them down a bit.

It has been my experience also, heinz 57's are the best for apartments.

A really good dog for an apartment is a pug. They hardley ever bark and they don't need a whole lot of exercise.  They are also very good with children.
