Dog uses pad and pees in the house

I have a 4 month old yorkie that pees on the pee pad but also pees on the carpet even when the pee pad is in the same room.  I am almost ready to let her go.  Crate training seems hard to do because it doesnt seem fair that I am home all day and she is stuck in a crate; but if she runs loose in the house she has accidents.  Is there any other way to train her?

Try to take her outside several times a day and stay with her and when she goes give her a treat, if she dosen't then don't give her one. When your not there use the crate. The crate should be the same size as she is, not a bigger one and put a toy in with her.

Being a dog is fun.  Being a GOOD DOG! is even better!

The fact that your dog is peeing in the house is not her fault, it's yours.  It shows a serious lack of leadership.  Without even knowing her, I will bet she is allowed on the furniture.

If your Yorkie was purchased at a pet store, online, backyard breeder or flea market, odds are it's a puppy mill puppy, that is comfortable in unsanitary condidtions, because that is all it knows.

Why aren't you walking her if you are home all day?  That poor pup is bored stiff! She is not having accidents...she gets your attention when she pees somewhere other than where you have the pads.  Negative attention, positive attention, attention is attention.  Use positive reinforcement for good behavior.

The first thing you MUST do is clean that carpet with a high quality enzyme cleaner.  You may not be able to smell the pee in the carpet, but your Yorkie can.

Next, set a timer for 20 minutes, and get her outside or on the pee pad.  Use positive reinforcement, punishment-free training methods.  PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE her every time she uses the pee pad, or pees OUTSIDE.  Dogs learn by association.  Once she learns peeing on the pee pad makes you happy...she will repeat that behavior.

Her crate should only be used when you are not at home.  It should be big enough for her to stand, turn and lie comfortably.  If it is too big, she may pee or poop in it.

Interact with her.  Enroll in a positive reinforcement, punishment-free Puppy Kindergarten.  It sounds like you can both use the training.

The only way you are going to get her to learn what she should do, is to be fair, firm, consistent and calm.  "Getting rid of her" is coping out...make the commitment to work with her.

Good luck!
