Dear Jen,
I'm so sorry to hear that your dog is sick. Just a few questions....there is only one tick identified thus far that transmits this illness to canines, ixodes daminai, I think is the technical name, but it's commonly known as the "deer tick" and far more prevalent in certain parts of the country, especially the northeast. If comfortable sharing, where do you live? Also, did your dog demonstrate a change in appetite, water consumption, energy level, evidence of joint pain, etc.? In short, did anything change that you noticed about him/her? The presence of Lymes Disease in dogs is easily identifiable with an assay test through your vet and will confirm immediately if he/she is infected. Unfortunately, the typical, almost immediately visible "bullseye lesion" that is left, after the tick has fed and dropped off, that humans can look for is hard to find on our furry friends!
The super news is that your dog, if diagnosed with Lymes can be treated with antibiotic therapy, administered at home for 14-21 days and for a reasonable cost. There is now a vaccine available that has been proven to be both safe and effective and is well worth the investment if you are able to do so. Oh, it is pricey with the vets, all of whom I love, however, research 1-800-PetMeds first and get a cost. Then ask your vet to match that price or to write you a prescription so that you can secure the vaccine, keeping in mind that he/she has the right to insist that it is administered by them. Few rarely play that game because they are good people who care about the animals.
That's it for now. I wish you and your puppy the very best!!
