Dodge truck overheating

my 1999 dodge ram 1500 truck 5.2L when i am giving the truck gas the temp. gauge stays in the normal range. when i stop and idol it gets hot up into the red and the check gauges light comes on. when i turn the ac off it cools some butnot enough. while still stopped i give it gas in park the temp. starts to go down again. anyone know what the problem is?
