Doc.x file?

When my wife saves her Word documents, they are saving as a "doc.x" file. Do you know why this is happening and how she can make it save a just a "doc"file instead?

A .docx file is a Word 2007 document; a .doc file is for Word 97-2003.  Microsoft has instructions that allow you to save a .docx file as a .doc file, either on a

case by case basis or by default.
