So Displaying Our Flag Is A Political Statement? Was It A Political Statement After 9/11 When FireFighters Were Killed?

Chester , Pa., firefighter James Krapf wants to know what's wrong with Old Glory. The 11-year veteran was suspended without pay Thursday after he refused to peel a sticker of the American flag from his locker.

"It's pride…it's a matter of pride," Krapf said.

A new department rule mandates that all stickers and statements – union, cartoon and political – be stripped from lockers after several offensive and racist images showed up in the firehouse. But Krapf figured the red, white and blue was safe.

It seems he was wrong.

"The chief came out and said 'You have to remove your stickers,' I said 'No disrespect chief, but I'm not taking the flag off,'" Krapf recounted. He says the officer then asked him to leave.

Fire Commissioner James Johnson , who served in the Marine Corps, vows the symbolism of the decal is not the issue.

"We wear the American flag on our uniform…it's flying outside that station," he said. "It is not about the American flag or patriotism."

But Krapf refuses to give up and he's not alone. The firefighters union plans to negotiate with the department on the issue.

"We applaud Jim Krapf because these colors don't run," said union prez Stacy Landrum .

Krapf, who was turned away from the station again Friday, plans to stand his ground. "It's the American flag, we should be able to fly it wherever we want…I don’t believe it's offensive to anyone," he said.

The issue and Krapf's fate is scheduled to be discussed at a meeting on Monday.

The real question is ,who is pressuring this fire commissioner to remove the American Flag? There is more to this story than meets the eye!

Well, here's the thing. A law or a policy has to be applied equally. If stickers are banned, then ALL stickers are banned. If he's allowed to keep his flag sticker, then those who put offensive stickers up can justifiably say that their freedom of speech has been curtailed and the policy is unfair. And they'd be right.

Look at it this way. Say it's a high school. Some kids wear a t shirt with a KKK message, or satanic messages, or whatever people may be offended by. The school, to solve this problem, bans all message t shirts. (This has become the policy in several schools for precisely this reason). So, after the policy is put in place some kid comes to school wearing a t shirt with a Christian message. He's penalized for this and not allowed to wear it. Now, the Christians are going to complain that the school is trying to eliminate Christianity. But they would be completely wrong. It has nothing to do with the message at all. It's the principle of applying the policy equitably and across ther board.

True, the issue is not the flag.  However, a rule was made, and, unfortunately, it doesn't just cover racism, it covers patriotism, too.  The removal of the sticker is, however, a matter of being politicaly correct.  If they let Jim keep his sticker, after making a rule to remove ALL stickers, who could respect the position of athority?  Currently, Jim is being insubordinate!  Is not obedience greater than sacrifice?  Maybe the department should place American flags on every locker...  Maybe Jim could find something else to place a sticker on that would make a greater statement of his patriotism.  I, too, am proud to be an American, and greatful for people like Jim who have fought for my freedom.  But, for JIm, you're an American before you're a firefighter, and sometimes, that requires the sacrifice of obedience, no matter how stupid the order seems.  I pray for Jim to recieve wisdom from GOD concerning this matter.  And I pray that the department and the union can come to terms without suffering American Pride.

Vroom! Vroom!

I feel the same as Bonestructure and CJesusFreak2. Its a matter of rules not patriotism. We all have to follow rules no matter how they might seem. I agree ALL stickers should be removed for the same reason Bonsestructure gave. Its just a fair thing to do and America is about fairness. RIGHT?! So, being fair and obediant could also be indicative to patriotic. Did I just say that? LOL

Fate will not be denied.  Destiny is what you make it.  Never confuse the two.

Public display of political/religious beliefs is not an infringement of one's First Amendment rights.  However, posting certain images is considered Malicious Harassment: swastika, KKK emblem, Crow's Foot, etc.

For what it's worth, this June, we sold 920 signed lithographs of Alan Bean's "Apollo 11."  And another Bean lithograph: "9-11."  All proceeds to charity, customers paid any price they wished.  I saw people who could have afforded the Mona Lisa shell out five figures for those signed lithographs, and a kid on the street with holes in his jeans got one free, because he felt so proud of these American moments.

One event was one of America's finest acheivements: manned landings on the Moon.

The other event was also one of Americ's finest moments: when America fused together, placing aside all other matters to concentrate on settling that score.

Now, Obama denies that we ever got to the moon (despite evidence to the contrary) and demands to pull our guys out of Iraq long before the job is complete.

If that seems like a contradiction in terms, that the President could be so disloyal, then ask him why he had the American flag removed from his corporate jet just before the election.

The answer to that would be most amusing.

There is no way to happiness... Happiness is the WAY!

We as Americans have allowed too much zero tolerance in our Country, and not allowed Common Sense to enter in the situations. Come on each situation in everything we do we use common sense. Somethings are exceptions to the rules and one of them is the United States Flag! This is our symbol of Freedom and this should always be honored at all times for all causes.  This is the time we should have more viability of seeing our Flag, we are in two wars and  America Needs to Stand UP and show we love our country! The flag should be honored all over this country more now then ever before!

I guess the flag is political and some employers can get into trouble for allowing political situations. Not all Americans care for the flag. I do, but, some don't! Employers are bound by law to protect each employee from anything that is offensive to them. I guess that' s why we can't talk religion at work either. Some things just don't belong on the job. Work is for work. Not for political, religious, patriotic expressions.

Your direction, not your intentions, determines your destina

tions.

If the Red, White and Blue is not a sign of Freedom, what is it a sign of? It is suppose to be a patriotic symbol, but now it can't be shown because someone has dictated that it can't be on a locker. There is a big difference in suggested slurs against different groups of people being put on lockers and the American Flag. If people in authority can't distinguish between these, they need some serious eye examinations preformed. Tear down the offensive stickers, but leave the flag on the lockers. There is a flag outside their station, I hope. Will that be the next to go?

Grandma,

Hopefully not. I saw on the news once a lady was offended by the American flag on her job. I guess some people just have to whine about anything.
