Mostly they didn't have to.  If you screwed up you would die from natural causes really fast.  Ostracism was the main form of punishment, and many cultures still apply it today.

Well for them punishment is discipline , having two in one, yet it is effective on different variety of children, some needed to talk it out and some really need to be spank. as long as the child gets it it is ok and no need to be drastic on the punishment.
