I searched for information about the world's longest bridges and found that there are many different types of bridges: Suspension Bridges, Cable-Stayed Bridges, Steel Arch Bridges and a few more. What are the differences between them? Which types are used in which situations?
You can read a very good explanation of 46 different types of bridges in :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge#Types_of_bridges
There are photos and also what is the use of every one of them
A more technical source with diagrams you can find in :
http://pghbridges.com/basics.htm
Detailed information about the theory and practice of each type of bridge:

We are studying bridges in class and I need to find out how bridges were developed and the sequential history of which type of bridge came first, second, and so on. I hope you can help.

some bridges are used for moths to fly over. these are called mothbridges and have fine wire mesh suspended over them to keep the moths from flying UP AND OUT!
