Are you asking about the way they work or about the way they feel? 

In principle, Diesel engines have no spark plugs, the ignition is spontaneous because of the pressure in the combustion chambers.

In practice, normally a turbo Diesel engine will have a lot of torque but less horsepower than a gasoline engine, and will consume much less fuel.

Wikipedia has good articles on engines, I suggest you read them.
