Diet Pills and Depression

Is it true most diet pills were discovered as side effects of medication to depression? I mean they started taking depression pills and saw that one of the side effects was loss of appetite and weight loss, so the started marketing those pills as diet pills.

Isn't that dangerous for people who are not suffering from depression?

Listen, I think that depression pills are strong and something that you can really only get from a prescription from your doctor.  The strong anti-depressants like prozac are not so easy to find, and that is not what your diet pills are.  It's true that some people who are overweight will become depressed, but to be perfectly honest, I'm not convinced that those pills really do anything at all.

If you're asking me it is dangerous, and I wouldn't go for the diet pills because I think they mess with your brains. I'm not judging anyone taking pills for depression, but I think taking depression pills to lose weight is dumb.

As a woman who suffers from major depression, let me assure you that with most of the anti-depressants I have tried, you can expect to gain between 30-40 lbs. However, Wellbutrin SE does not appear to add weight with the added bonus of allowing you to quit smoking quite easily.
