Detroit Auto Manufacturers Selling Less

GM and the Detroit Auto Manufacturers are closing probably the worst year in the last decade, losing numbers to Japanese makers like Toyota.

Do you think one of the reasons people buy less cars, and opt for the more fuel efficient ones, because we're growing greener? Can we claim this change to environmental issues?

Yes that's one good reason but sure not the only one.  Specially Toyota is a very innovative highly efficient company (many books and articles were written on "The Toyota Way / Culture").... We all have to admit that in terms of value for money the average Japanese car is better than most other cars (American / european).  They are also first in innovation (Hibrid cars, low petrol consumption, low air pollusion, New matketing approachs [Lexus], new insights [models], breakthrough, etc....).  The only way to fight it MUST be in the same field: Doing exactly what the Japanese are doing and a bit more !.  Who said we can't ???????

I think the main reason was the number of lemons that rolled off the Detroit production lines and the fact that the Japanese were offering more car and higher quality for the money. Toyota pioneered a successful zero defects on the spot program, which meant that defects were discovered and immediately repaired on the production line. Another successful feature was  extreme reduction of inventory. Auto parts were ordered from suppliers at the same rate as the cars were manufactured thus keeping the car manufacturers' overhead to a minimum. This gave the Japanese a major competitive advantage over Detroit.
