While I cannot cite any credible research on the subject, I find Cyril N. Parkinson's speculations quite intriguing. You can take a look at his book "Parkinson's Law: or The pursuit of progress", chapter: "Plans and Plants, or The Administrative Block".



In brief Parkinson states that poor interior design (as well as the overall architecture) of an organisation's headguarters is a condition for its progress. He says that organisations cannot afford to spend time on building their perfect office while they are working hard to thrive; they can do that only after they've reached their zenith, that is in their decline...
