Kangaroo rats live in the desert, and therefore had to learn how to be both water efficient and to deal with the heat. By staying in the burrows for most of the day, and getting out at night the not only avoid being outside in the hot desert sun, they also enjoy the cooler burrows during the day.

The only disadvantage I can think of is that there's less available food at night, but as most of their diet consists of flora, this is hardly a problem. Another disadvantage of sorts is that most predators in the desert are also active during the night, thus the kangaroo rat might be more susceptible to being hunted.

Love is the battery of life....

Hi Danielle,

The Kangaroo rat is a desert mammle who is very much adopted to the desert conditions (hot at day cool at night).  Kangaroo rat is an example of taking the best advantage of every drop of water it can get (avoids loosing water at day time and squeezing any m"g of salts from the water.  that's the reason it's kidneys are at least 4 times more developed compared to humans).
Don't worry, Kangaroo rat won't need help to find it's food at night.... It has a very developed sense of smell.
Almost forgot: It is much more safe (for him) at night (preditors) silent and much more easy to run away and hide.
Don't forget that he stores food at it's burrow (so he is resting next to the fridge......).
Best Regards,
D"r D. Oron.
