Define "de" preceeding Italian last names.

What does "de" stand for when it rests between the first and last name of people with Italian Ascent? Only thing I have been able to find on DE using www is that it means German in English. ???

I Believe it means "of".

Yes, it means 'of'. Simply. In the past, people in various countries were labeled with their name and where they were from among other factors. So a man named Giovanni from Seville, would be titled Giovanni de Seville. It's similar to name traditions in many other countries. For example, in norway, sigurd, son of Halvard would be named Sigurd Halvardson.
