Republicans tend to believe that people don't need hand outs, they need hand ups.  They believe in personal responsibility.

Democrats believe that they are smart and the public is stupid.  They believe it is their job to take from those who earn to give to the lazy.

It is difficult to tell anymore! The difference is not in the parties but in the individuals holding the particular office. Case in point is that Republicans have always tied themselves to a fiscally conservative budget model. However, Bill Clinton who was a Democrat President for 8 years actually ran much lower deficits than George Bush, an alleged conservative that  has increased the deficit by over three trillion dollars in the past 7.5 years. The rise of the independents is a very strong indicator that many Americans are disenfranchised with both parties. with the current mood of the country being what it is, should a qualified independent run for the presidency, both the Democrats and Republicans would be hard pressed to defeat them in a general election.

Republicans believe in equality of opportunity, Democrats believe in equality of outcome.  Republicans see us as Americans, Democrats see us as hyphenated Americans.

The major difference are the issues of gay rights and women rights.  Democrats support both, and are strong advocates of all human rights.  They oppose the war.  They advocate raising our taxes, but the Republican's do it too, just more of a hidden form.

Republican's provide tax breaks for the rich, especially estate taxes.   They also heavily support defense spending.  They claim they don't want to raise taxes, but they suck it out of us by raising food prices, gas prices.......other tax methods.  Political platforms change, and all politicians make promises they don't always keep.

So in the end, I don't see a real difference.   Both political parties have hidden agenda's and manipulate the public for their own special interests.
