A debit card is used to pull money from an account (checking/savings) that you have funds in. A debit card is not used in your credit rating and will not let you spend more than what you have funds available in your account. These are a great idea for people that can not handle credit wisely.
A credit card is issued to you based on your credit score and financial responsibility. You will have to qualify and each one will have a set limit available to you. When applying for a credit card be sure to read the fine print to know what all the fees and APR will be.
It is best to use each one wisely.
Good luck and best wishes.
you get points on your debit card depending on your bank also you dont get a bill or interest the money comes right out of your checking account first it comes out as a authorazation sorry for poor spelling then it debits your checking account usually overnight so you have to watch it with a debit card which has no pre set credit limit because it can overdraw your checking account and cause very hefty overdraft fees using your debit card is just like writing a check and if you use all the money in your checking account your debit card will not work a credit card has a pre set credit limit wich when you use all the credit limit and try to use the credit card you will have a overlimit fee the overlimit fee is different depending on your bank I am not a banking expert but I have used both a debit card and a credit card so I know how each one works I hope I answered your question for you Gene G Jr
Happiness is a choice. Choose to be happy.
Purchases with your debit card are like paying with cash. The money is immediately withdrawn from your checking account. No points are given with my bank but at least you are kept under control. You can't spend more money than you actually have.
Credit cards are like taking out a loan with a very high interest rate. If you can't afford to pay more than the minimum due each month, don't get a credit card. You could be paying for that big screen T.V. for the rest of your life. If you can afford it, it's a good way to boost your credit score which then enables you to obtain even more credit. It's too easy to "charge it". Think about it long and hard and READ THE FINE PRINT for the interest rates, late fees, annual fees, cash advance fees, etc. before applying for credit. I learned the hard way and today, I only have 1 credit card with a very low limit. 99% of my purchases are with my debit card. BE CAREFUL!

A debit card is just hooked up to your checking account, but it can be used wherever credit cards are accepted. They are better because you do not have the hassle of interest rates and credit card consolidation strategies.
a credit card has money on it already and you have to apply for it, a debit card is a card you get from your bank when you open an account and you have to keep money in the bank to cover your purchases and no you do not get points for using a debit card
All of the previous answers gave pretty good insight... the only other thing to add is that when you make a purchase with your debit card yo u need to enter your pin # and in some cases the retailer may have a cash back option where you can increase the amount of the purchase and get the difference in cash. When you choose a credit card no such dreaming is possible. Not that you would want to advance cash on a credit card anyway... as stated "read the fine print" And finally, in some instances the bank tacks on a charge for using "debit" instead of the "credit" option for those debit cards that act as a credit card for the transaction. it used to be .25 or .75 per transaction, some banks still pratice this depending on if they pay for processing. So when you're at the counter with your debit card with the VIsa or MC logo on it, and the store clerk asks "Debit or Credit?" choose "credit" this won't require you entering a PIN and there will no surprise charges. It will still copme directly from your checking account, but you just have the option of going to any retailer that accepts MC/ Visa.
A debit card uses funds from your checking account. If you use your debt card and don't have the funds in it, it's possible that the transaction will go through and you will have an overdraft fee. There are several reasons why the transaction gets approved. 1-The banks let the transaction occur because of the relationship you have with the bank. They think you should know how much money you have in your account and if you want to overdrft it, it's because of an emergency. Or a check could have cleared around the same time. Bottom line, if you don't have it, don't spend it...it's YOUR money. As for perks, some banks have perks for schools (WaMu), airlines, Bank of America has Keep the Change, airlines, Nascar points, MyExpression Banking which you earn points for team gear, etc. Also, most banks charge a fee if you use an ATM machine that is not from their bank. So choose a bank that is near you and where you travel.
Credit cards were described fine in the previos statements. Keep in mind, it's usually the better the rewards, the higher the APR. Find out when you could start redeeming points. I have a card that redeems points at 2500(BankAmericard visa). I had a card that rounds up the points to the nearest thousant. Example, my airline ticket was $667 but Capital One used 70,000 points not 66700 points. Plus redeemation starts at 10,000 points. If you plan on traveling outside of the USA, there is a 3% foreign currency fee on Visa/MC. Amex has 1% and has offices n many large cities around the world. But bring both cards with you because AMEX is not as widely accepted as Visa?MC.
Good Luck
