Dealing with small dog over-anxiety

What is the best way to curb a small dog's fear of big dogs when it extremely effects their manners during walks(ie-trying to nip large dogs)?

There is a possibility the dog, in someone else's care, was either nipped by another dog or in some way harmed or neglected before having any signs of this type of behavior, which began 1 month ago. The dog is otherwise docile and gentle on walks and with both people and small dogs, cats, etc. but, we don't know exactly what happened to provoke the dog's fear or why it occurs during only one activity(walks) and only when noticing a larger dog.

Dog is in good health with no signs of injury.

I have two small dogs; they get walked everyday, usually are afraid of big dogs; ans: I do every thing I can to keep them away form big dogs; cross the street, turn around whatever, decrease their anxiety.

I am not a trained specialist in dog behavior, but I know that rewarding your dog's good behavior with praise, love, and a few treats usually works. When you are walking the dog and she/he starts to misbehave use a stern "NO". When the dog has listened to you, praise them, pat them and say, "Good Boy/Girl", and then, maybe a treat? Good Luck.

Both really great suggestions! It isn't easy to think of most simple things when it's your own dog freaking out!  Maybe the dog is picking up on my stress, also since it was always ok to greet other dogs on walks.

I don't want the dog to get so scared going for walks is a source of stress. Reducing anxiety seems like the best first step. A refresher 'training' might be good but, I don't think this dog is going to easily do that when so over-stressed. Maybe after we get the dog back to knowing walks and fear don't go together treats would help before it becomes a bad habit. It's manageable for now just a very unexpected and embarrassing change because the dog is so sweet natured.

Thanks for your suggestions!
