Dad

My parents are divorced and I don't like spending time with my dad. I don't feel comfortable over there.  I can't stand it.  I am kind of scared to confront my dad about how I feel.  What should I say

Do you know why you're uncomfortable?  Perhaps just a different environment?

Talk to him.  Divorce and then "visiting" is always awkward at first, but he's your dad.  And he's important in your life.  Be in contact by phone and in person.  The divorce had nothing to do with you.

But it's painful, I know.  Try not take a side and understand both sides are hurting, no matter who started it.  But also know both love you.  Don't let whatever is making you uncomfortable come between you.

Talk about it.  It might be an easy fix.

Good luck.

Have you told your how you feel about your Dad? Maybe you should try and sit down with your mom and try to see where this discomfort is coming from. Do you blame your dad for the divorce? Has he done something that you do not approve of? Maybe you should also try to give your dad a chance.

Okay, Thank You. You really made me think about the situation differently.  I appreciate all of your help and I will be sure to talk to both parents and see what they have to say.

Thank you for all of your help.  I will tell you what happens after i talk to them.

Yes I have told my mom how I feel about my dad.  I do blame him and he always drinks, smokes, and acts like a child.  I fel uncomfortable and i don't think it is the right kind of enviornment to be going into.  How should I try to give him a chance? Do you have any suggestions on how I can or should give him a chance?

Yes you should give him a chance.  This is your dad!  Unfortunately you are both sharing the same experience but it's completely different experiences.  And you're more used to talking to your mom in a straightforward way than you are your dad.  It's weird to "visit" your dad when he used to live at home.  It's all weird. But it's worth it to stay connected.  Keep your loved ones close.  Even when they're acting out.

Please try to get through this initial awkward gap.  In 5 years you may be the one acting out and he's the one that pulls you back down to Earth.

I really wish you and your family well, Morgan.
