I'm a reasonably competent person who can follow instructions; but I haven't worked on many DIY projects. What does the Yedda community recommend that I try? I'd like to start with an easy project -- perhaps building something simple and small -- and then I'll progress from there. Is there a good website for beginner projects?
First of all, my suggestion for you is- go with the necessity. The idea behind DIY is to save money, and what is a better way to save money then building something you really need (though I wouldn't start right away with something to complicated). A good website to start with is BobVila. this guy has a TV show of DIY anf the website is sorted by subjects like: bedroom, roofing, decks etc. There are all kind of project which includes specific directions, tips and sometimes video clips of the actual work.

Do it yourself movement has become more and more prevalent as the years progress. Not only does it allow people to save some money (they don't have to pay for the services of a professional to get things done), the do it yourself way of life gives people a sense of accomplishment.

Well the first thing I would say is look to Lowes ,Home Depot for their seminars that they hold all the time in their stores. Then look around and find something that needs fixing or updating. Then identify what you need to do this project ex. pipe wrenches, levels , hammer and nails etc. then go out and purchase whatever you need for this 1 project with a little extra material incase you goof up. Then draw out your idea and make some measurements. When getting down to it remember think it through but dont strain it is not rocket science. Then measure 2 x cut 1 x keep your eyes covered and your fingers away from the saw blade you will be fine
