DIY Plans for Bookcase?

Where can I find a good set of DIY plans for building floor to ceiling book cases in my study?  I'm NOT mechanical, so I probably don't have the tools to do it yet.  Should I just hire someone?  Won't that be grossly expensive?  Should I use beech, or some other wood?

Hi,

here are two plans for building a tall bookcase, the first is from Black&Decker , and the second and better one IMO from Hands on.

Hope it would be useful.

Building a simple bookcase is pretty easy these days, you can buy the plywood and wood already cut to measure and assembling one with one of the following plans should be easy for anybody with common sense and basic skills.Wink

bringing in a carpenter whould probably have an overhead if it is only a small project, for a large library project it is certainly worthwhile.

anyhow the advantage of doing it yourself is that you get to keep the tools Cool, and the rule of thumb for many woodworking project is that what you save by doing it yourself ( calculating materials, tool costs and labor - your time) is usually equal to the value of the tools. but then again you get to keep the tools.

enjoy

Hi,

You will find lots of free bookcase plans on the Internet.  Check my web sites too. I would recommend using 3/4 inch plywood for the carcass of your cabinet. Its stronger than solid wood.
