Curtain rod placement

My window is a few inches too long for 63" curtains and there is a radiator under the window so I can't use anything longer than 63". Is it ok to hang the curtain rod a few inches below the top of the window trim so that the curtains at least come to the windowsill, or will that look awkward?

Love is the battery of life....

Hi,

It's O.K., specially if you "hide" it (make it less noticed).  I am sure you'll get a good advise how to do it at the curtain shop.  I faced the same problem and this solution was perfect.
Best regards,

I did that on purpose in our on my old apartment to let some light in through the top of the window, the main reason I put in curtains was privacy - I lived on the first floor and there were people walking around the buildings yard a lot. The apartment itself was rather dark so it made sense to get the privacy of curtains white living about 10 cm on top to get in some light, it didn't look strange at all.

I think, that if you put the curtain rail only a small distance under the top of the window, it would look odd - it would look as if you had only done it to make your existing curtains fit, which is exactly what you're doing! Is there any way you can let the hems on your curtains down to fill the gap? Or why not find some contrasting fabric which matches something else in your room, and add this contrasting band on the bottom of your curtains, to fill the gap?

Much better, I think, to try to make your curtains fit your window rather than dropping the rail.

Hi cmc1880,

Two option I would consider:

1. choosing a curtain desing that hang by cloth strips (see image below) this will enable you to replace the strips with longer ones without it looking to funny.

2. use curtain clips but add a bead string to the original clips. This could result in an interesting design.

cheers :)
