Is there any way to cure sinusitis, without having to undergo an operation?

I enjoy using Yedda to ask and answer medical questions. I previously worked as a nurse but am now based from home - having just completed a long spell of breast cancer treatment.

Life has also been busy lately after the arrival of our new puppy called poppy. She's a black labarador retriever and drives us all crazy at times but we just adore the buzz she brings to the house. Last week she caused me a shoulder injury by tugging when out walking - but I can forgive that for the fun she brings.

Last month my husband invested in the Resperate device for lower blood pressure - and boy is it effective? We've discovered that it's much better overall to lower blood pressure naturally.

Antibiotics often help

Most ENT specialists now use steroid nose sprays as the initial treatment - operations for sinusitis are now much rarer than previously

Often times untreated allergies are the underlying cause behind chronic sinusitis. Getting the allergies under control will allow time for the sinuses to more fully heal, maybe.

There are a lot of different approaches to getting allergies under control. Topical nasal steroids is one of form of medication. There are also antihistamines, and the new drug Singulair, etc.

Asking friends for a good allergist recommendation is key.

As for surgergy, make sure you get a second or even third opinion. My ENT (who I'm not going back to) recommended sinus surgery but two other docs, one an ENT, one an allergist, also saw the MRI and strongly urged against it.

I'll search, while you Cool wait.

I have acute sinusitis and I have tried the steroids, and other medically suggested products.  Now, I'm using Vyramist Nasal Spray and it seems to help, however there are days when I skip it because I drink coffee and I notice that when I do drink coffee, my heart races.  I don't experience any side affects except for small sores in the nose....very minute but other than that, there is nothing else out there to cure it, and I have had since the 80s.  I have learned how to manage it throughout the years.  I have yet to elect the surgical method.

Here's Additional Information I Found From Mayo Clinic:

Acute sinusitis: Do over-the-counter treatments help?

Answer

Yes. Over-the-counter pain relievers and decongestants may help relieve facial pain and sinus congestion associated with acute sinusitis. Other home remedies you may want to try:

  • Steam your sinus cavities. Drape a towel over your head as you breathe in the steam from a bowl of hot water. Or take a hot shower, breathing in the warm, moist air.
  • Apply warm compresses. Place warm, damp towels around your nose, cheeks and eyes to ease facial pain.
  • Drink plenty of fluids. Consuming additional fluids helps dilute mucous secretions and promotes drainage.
  • Avoid alcohol. Drinking alcohol can worsen the swelling of the lining of your nose and sinuses.
  • Use a saline nasal spray. Spray a saline solution in your nose several times a day to relieve congestion.

Most people with acute sinusitis get better without antibiotics. However, if your symptoms last longer than a few days, talk to your doctor.

From what I hear operation is not really good.  I also have tried so many different Doc. proscribed medication and nothing worked, actually some of it made it worse because I was constantly on antibiotics my immune system weakened so I turned to natural ways to cure sinuses.  I can't say they are 100% cured but what I did really helps me. here is a good article that can help you understand what needs to be done.

I have to really work on my immune system the most, so besides the C vitamin I tried this Mangosteen 100% natural juice and it worked great!

I am a registered pharmacist from Columbia, SC and have struggled with allergies, asthma and sinusitis since childhood.  Two years ago, I ran out of conventional options to treat my sinusitis.  That year I had two sinus surgeries, and only grew worse, and was on antibiotics almost continually.  My allergist didn't want me to take more antibiotics because I was already allergic to four classes of antibiotics and he feared I would become allergic to more - and I agreed.  The antibiotic route didn't seem to promise a long-term solution.  In fact, I believe being on so many antibiotics may have contributed to my chronic miserable condition by creating resistance.  I tried allergy shots but couldn't tolerate them.  My out of pocket cost was well over $5000 that year for all the surgeries, prescriptions, CT scans, allergy testing, allergy serum, and shots.  And I was WORSE by the end of the year than I had been before all of those treatments.  I was also beginning to suspect that my antihistamine prescription and steroid nasal sprays may actually be making things worse instead of better.  I think the antihistamine made the mucus thicker, creating more pressure and I was concerned that the steroid nasal sprays may be aiding the infection by possibly suppressing my immune system in my nasal passages.  At minimum, all my prescriptions did not seem to be helping much.  That's when I began a determined search for alternatives to treat my allergies and sinusitis.      This spring I tried Sinol and was amazed at my results.  Sinol controls all of my nasal allergy symptoms: the post nasal drip, the itching, the pressure, the sneezing, the headaches and the congestion.  And with the drainage being so significantly reduced, I can actually sleep all night!  Insomnia was one of the worst aspects of chronic sinusitis to me.  I don't have to take diphenhydramine to help me sleep at night anymore!  Sinol also has drastically reduced the symptoms of my four year old extremely antibiotic-resistant bacterial sinus infection.    I am not taking my prescription steroid nasal sprays or my antihistamine/decongestant medications at all and it is the height of the worst allergy time of the year for me.  Earlier this year I had used another capsaicin based nasal spray but was very pleasantly surprised to find that Sinol is MUCH less painful to use. Sinol is significantly more tolerable because of the decrease in stinging and burning sensation than the other capsaicin based nasal spray I've used.  And, as a pharmacist, I like the delivery system much better with Sinol.  Sinol's spray bottle forms a finer mist and doesn't run back down the nostrils or down the throat.  I can even spray Sinol and immediately lie down in bed without gagging on a flood of stinging liquid running down my throat.  I am also very impressed that this is an FDA licensed product (the other spray I had tried was not) and that gives me even greater confidence to recommend Sinol to patients knowing that it has been proven to be safe and effective and must meet rigorous FDA quality standards.  I wish that Sinol was already available in retail pharmacies so that I could just run to the shelf and grab a bottle for all my suffering patients with allergies, sinusitis and migraines.   I have given out bottles of Sinol to all my coworkers with migraines and family members with allergies and sinus problems and have heard such great reviews I've thought about quitting my job and opening a Sinol stand on the side of the road!     Sincerely and with deepest gratitude,April Cassidy R.Ph.Cayce, SC

Surgery scares me too. My chronic sinusitis did get so bad that I thought I might have to go 'under the knife'. I was just forwarded this link, about a new procedere called balloon sinuplasty. Looks promising and supposed to be less invasive than surgery.
