There is a great story I heard about one of Canada's Prime Ministers.
He was in the hallway, and asked his counterpart in another party if he should think of running to be the leader of the country. His counterpart said: "well, if you don't want to be the prime minister, then don't run". So he ran. He won.
Just do it. Don't talk about it. Don't care if you feel awkward or what will happen. The worse that could happen is he says no, and you can move on instead of thinking shoulda, coulda, woulda for the rest of your life.
