Put the needle through the chain 1 space.  Pick up and pull the working thread through, forming a loop on the needle.  Keep this loop on the needle while you go over the chain 1 space and catch the thread.  Pull that thread through the loop as if you were making a chair stitch.

After making chain 1 space, chain two more.  Then go back and single crochet in chain 1 space.  Hope this is what you were asking.
