Just use dynamic drive favicon creator:
http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/
Its free and you can upload your pre made image to it and it gives ya a download link to the favicon.

I think favicons are a must but I really like animated favicons at the minute have you tried to use an animated gif as your favicon? They look really good.
