Coup D'etat in Thailand

Is there any chance that Gen.Boonyaratglin will hand over the control back to the Thai people? What does history tell about similar events that took place in other parts of the world?

Military coups in Thailand are a relatively common thing. There has been numerous attempts in the last 50 years there. Coups in Thailand are generally perceived as the king's way of balancing the political forces and reducing tension. The king is usually aware of the coups beforehand and there is never violence involved.

This particular coup was long anticipated by the Thai people since the current prime minister had a corrupted image and there has been a strong movement for replacing him.

No one in Thailand is too worried about the outcome of this coup. The king is in control and all parties are very loyal to him.

Well, in most cases when the military takes over, they state that the control will be given back to the people, once bla bla bla will happen.

However, as I understand the situation in Thailand, it seems that the Thai people is somewhat pleased about Thaksin being replaced.

Another thing to take into consideration is that Boonyaratglin didn't challenge the king, and still answers to him. The king is extremely revered in Thailand, and hopefully he'll take an active role in restoring democracy to the country, as he did in the past.

I spoke to a thai friend this morning, and he said that once the uncertainty around Thaksin return from NY will evaporate, most thais believe that the military control will continue untill the scheduled elections due next year.

As for me, I'm not changing my flight plans to thailand for the beginning of october... :)

The present military coup was the first coup in 15 years. At that time, the father of General Sonthi Boonyaratglin who deposed the corrupted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra last week was deposed himself. I believe that General Boonyaratglin will turn control to a civilian government as it happened before.
